Abbotsholme pupil, Philippa Oldacre, entered the 500 WORDS competition run by The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, BBC Radio 2, and her story has been picked as one of just 4,500 from over 123,400 entries.
Pippa Oldacre, aged 13, from Derby, decided to enter the competition with her story called ‘The Glimpse’. Her story is about a Jewish boy who gives you glimpses into his life, and at the end you realise he is telling them as a 70 year old. The Glimpse – which made it into the top 3.5% – has been forwarded with the other chosen stories to the Reading Agency for the second round of judging. Pippa will know in early May if ‘The Glimpse’ has been shortlisted for the 500 WORDS final 50.
Pippa was sent a certificate for her amazing achievement from the 500 WORDS Team.
She said of her success, “I wrote the story in my spare time because I am always writing stories, and when I showed it to my Dad, he told me to show it to my teachers – which I didn’t – so my Dad emailed the story in and the teachers said it was amazing.”
“It was Mrs Gaunt who suggested that it should be entered into a national competition so I had to shorten it from 1700 to 500 words; I am so excited about being in the last 4500!”
