This week, Abbotsholme pupils and staff will be sitting down to Christmas lunch and enjoying Abbotsholme-grown Abbotsholme Christmas turkeyturkeys with their roast potatoes and sprouts!

Fifteen turkeys arrived at Abbotsholme in September to provide the turkey meat for the school’s Christmas lunch, and to give our pupils the opportunity to be part of the rearing process and learn about where food comes from.

Abbotsholme hopes to build on the success of the farming of turkeys on the school site next year and provide parents and additional customers with Abbotsholme Turkeys!

Christina Liddle, Head of Estate Education, said, “The turkeys have been a great project for our pupils with Year 11 and 12 pupils weighing the turkeys each week to monitor their growth with their routine adjusted appropriately to ensure continued weight gain.”

She added, “The turkeys spent much of their time outside in the fresh air with the option of going into the barn whenever they wanted leading to many discussions about the differences between intensive and non intensive farming and the ethics of rearing animals for meat.”
