Abbotsholme School European Round Square ConferenceAbbotsholme School was delighted to welcome Heads, Round Square Reps and pupils from Germany, UK, Romania and Switzerland over the weekend for the European Round Square Conference.

Abbotsholme made this a Conference to remember with the accommodation being on the Playfield Fields – in tents; and thankfully the weather was fabulous and even the cold night time temperatures did not seem to dampen the spirits of the group.

On Friday evening the pupils took part in ice-breaker games, followed by a hog roast and a very welcome campfire. An art activity followed where pupils designed amazing outfits from bits and bobs to dress one of their team!

On Saturday morning we enjoyed a presentation by Sarah Brook, a 25 year-old who has set up a charity called Sparkle Malawi. Her very moving presentation enthused us all to devote some of our fundraising to her cause.

Following this, Heads, Reps and pupils joined together to enjoy one of six different adventurous activities:

Bush craft (where the group had to build a fire and cook a fish, but only had one match with which to light the fire), Horse Riding, Kayaking and Climbing, Rafting (where they had to build the raft, race it down the river and then dismantle it) and Farm (where they had to round up the sheep!)

During the afternoon the group travelled to Lea Green Activity Centre in Matlock to try out the High Ropes course and the Big Swing. You could hear the screams for miles!

The Barn Dance in the evening was a very special introduction to a special Abbotsholme tradition, which was great fun and enjoyed by all.

Sunday brought more fine weather and the group raced around the school grounds completing the orienteering course, hotly pursued by a tiger (an Abbotsholme Sixth Former!) who was cruelly pelted with eggs to repel him! The weekend finished with a fabulous presentation put together by Abbotsholme pupils Barney Wilson and Tara Witcomb.

Steve Fairclough, Headmaster at Abbotsholme said, “I am very proud that Abbotsholme was able to host such an important event, and to be able to show Heads and Reps one side of the education here at Abbotsholme through the activities and events we put on during the weekend – including the accommodation in the tents on the playing fields – was fantastic.”

“Everybody really enjoyed the weekend, and made every moment of the weekend matter.”
