An ‘Outdoor Educational’ experience in a different location
Year 9 students from Burgess Hill School for Girls have recently returned from their annual trip to Spain. The whole year group went to Gredos, a town set in the spectacular mountain scenery of the Sierra de Gredos in central Spain. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the exciting experience of an “outdoor educational experience” in a very different location.
After an early start on Monday 7th October, the group started their week away with a visit to the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid to see Picasso’s famous Guernica painting, before continuing their journey to the week’s base in the Sierra de Gredos Nature Park.
A busy programme throughout the rest of the week of cross curricular activities was arranged including geography and biology fieldwork, art, mathematics, orienteering, archery, Spanish and history. Among the week’s many highlights were a day trip to the city of Salamanca where the girls enjoyed a guided tour of some of the city’s historic buildings, a visit to the Gredos adventure park to face the challenges of the zip wire and high ropes course and a chance to learn how to cook some traditional Spanish tapas.
Trip Leader Mr Rob Stanway, Curriculum Group Leader for Science, Mathematics and ICT said “Taking a whole year group to Spain for a week is a fantastic idea. As well as all the opportunities to learn and enjoy themselves, spending a week away from their familiar surroundings was a really valuable experience for the girls. This experience is a unique way of enhancing their learning”.
