cobham_hall_boy_bandGirls in Years 7 – 10 at Cobham Hall had an exciting lesson on e-safety and cyberbullying last week, when Irish boyband ‘Taken’ came into school.

The band, Ste, Richie & Eoghan, performed several songs, before discussing e-safety with the girls.  Clearly passionate about the topic, the boys explained the importance of staying safe, as well as how to do this, and what to do if things go wrong.  They highlighted that the girls should try and consider how others might feel when something is posted on social media.  They also emphasised the need to ignore negative messages, even if the temptation might be to say something mean back.

“It was really good,” said Year 8 student Philoan. “They talked about cyberbullying in a way that more people would listen and take notice.  I’m a rock and metal music listener, so I was not looking forward to a boyband coming in to sing, but they really got people on their feet and enjoying the talk.”

Fellow Year 8 student Maisy agreed, saying “I thought the performance was great because they were letting us know about something very serious and important in a fun way and a way that we will remember.”

“E-safety and Cyberbullying are topics we are incredibly keen to raise awareness about,” explained Assistant Headmistress and Head of Boarding Mrs Barratt.  “We know that social media is continuing to grow, and become part of life for students now.  We want to be sure that as well as enjoying the benefits it brings, students are aware of, and know how to deal with, the dangers it also poses.

The girls enjoyed the performance and the talk, and were able to relate to other young people sharing their experiences of e-safety, cyberbullying and its long term effects.”
