Cobham Hall students were excited to welcome the author of the 2015 Costa Book of the Year Winner, Frances Hardinge to School this week.

Ms Hardinge, who’s book ‘The Lie Tree’ became only the second children’s book to take the prestigious award, came to Cobham Hall to give a talk about her book to girls in Years 7 to 10, and to involve the younger girls in a creative writing workshop.Year 7 girls with Frances Hardinge

Librarian Mrs Andrea Jakso, who arranged the visit following the popularity of ‘The Lie Tree’ amongst members of the Staff and Sixth Form Book Club prior to the book winning the prestigious award, was thrilled with the visit, “The girls really enjoyed it.  Frances was very engaging and motivating.  During the talks you could hear a pin drop; the girls were hanging onto her every word.  It was inspirational.  The workshop was great fun as the girls had the freedom to think up very imaginative settings for a story, and her ability to bring the narrative together was impressive.”

A natural with the students, the workshop involved a lot of laughter and smiles as Ms Hardinge took the girls’ ideas and built them up into a narrative, encouraging them with questions that utilised the senses – what could she see or hear?  The girls’ were incredibly enthusiastic, all joining in and putting forward suggestions, which Ms Hardinge was able to instantly weave into a narrative.  The girls will now be finishing the stories they started during the workshop, and we can’t wait to read them!
