Dollar Academy debators at National ConferenceTwo pupils from Dollar Academy took part in a debate at this year’s national food and drink conference held in Perth Concert Hall on 7th March, sharing the stage with a number of high profile international speakers – including Barak Obama’s aide Dr Janey Thornton and top Scottish Chef Nick Nairn.

Anna George and Tom Clode (both Form V) had been invited to attend the event, along with a team from Dundee High, to debate the advertising of junk food aimed at young children. The Dollar team drew to propose that such advertising should be banned and, after a well fought debate, the result was decided by a public vote with Anna and Tom winning 53% to 47%.

Mr Neil McFadyean, Head of World Studies and Debating Coach at Dollar Academy, commented: “It was an honour for Dollar to be invited to take part in a debate in front of such a prestigious audience. It is often the luck of the draw with such topics but our team made a good case in front of stiff opposition. We are delighted with how well Anna and Tom performed.”
