Dollar Academy former pupil James Cameron has been named as one of the UK's brightest young engineers after winning a prestigious scholarship from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

The James Clayton Undergraduate Scholarship will contribte £1 000 per year to James' degree at Strathclyde University. The Scholarship was awarded to just 20 of the top engineering students in the UK.

Professor Roderick Smith, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “James is one of the best young engineers the UK has to offer, and we hope this scholarship can help him in his journey to a hugely successful engineering career.

"The world’s future depends on the ingenuity of the next generation of engineers, like James, to solve global issues from climate change to overpopulation.”

Mr Jim Fulton, Head of Physics at Dollar Academy, said: "Engineering is a popular study choice for Dollar Academy school leavers and we are lucky to have a very close partnership with the University of Strathclyde, which facilitates academic research placements for our final year pupils and provides early opportunity for potential applicants to be inspired by the facilities and resources in the Engineering Department.

"As part of his Advanced Higher Physics, James Cameron spent some time at Strathclyde measuring fluid flow with ultrasonic transducers. We are delighted that he has continued to follow his passion for engineering and has gone on to achieve so much."
