Jonathan Gillespie, Head Master of Lancing College, is leaving the school at the end of the summer term, after eight outstanding years of leadership. During his tenure, pupils at Lancing have obtained excellent academic results, whilst opportunities to fulfil their potential beyond the classroom have also been enhanced. The school has expanded its facilities in a number of ways, including the building and completion of the exceptional new Art School. Jonathan Gillespie has been appointed Headmaster of St Albans School, one of the oldest and leading day schools in the country.

The Governing Body of Lancing College is delighted to announce the appointment of Dominic Oliver as their new Head Master. He will join the school in September 2014. Dominic Oliver is currently Deputy Head of the three Bedales Schools. He was the outstanding candidate in an extremely strong field of applicants.

Dominic Oliver, a Shakespeare scholar with a keen interest in the literary and political history of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, has published in his areas of expertise.

He gained a First Class Degree in English Literature from Sheffield University and an M.Phil in English from St. Peter’s College Oxford, after which he became a member of the University of Oxford English Faculty and Lecturer at St Peter’s College. Oliver subsequently taught at the Royal Grammar School Worcester, after which he became Head of English and Head of Academic Development at Malvern College.

Dominic Oliver is married with two sons, aged 11 and 8, and his many interests encompass areas in which Lancing excels: choral singing, theatre, hill walking, swimming and football. He is keenly anticipating his headship here and explains “The warmth of the Lancing community, its rich history, its academic distinction and its focus on all-round education combine to make it a very special place. It will be a privilege to lead Lancing in the years to come.”

Dr Harry Brünjes, Chairman of the Governing Body of Lancing College, spoke on behalf of all his colleagues when he said: “We believe that Dominic will bring vibrancy, energy and originality, together with a deep commitment to the longstanding values and traditions of Lancing”.
