Fifteen choristers from St Leonards-Mayfield School in East Sussex are preparing for the most important performances of their lives this week. The girls, who are all members of the School’s prestigious choir, Schola Cantorum, have been invited to sing for the Pope in the Vatican and at three of the most prestigious churches in Rome.

Evening mass at the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva on Tuesday 25 October will be followed by the Papal Audience on Wednesday morning, mass at The Venerable English College in the afternoon and noonday mass at St Peter’s Basilica on Thursday.

The choir has been buoyed by a letter of support from His Excellency Nigel Baker, the British Ambassador to the Holy See, who wrote to the girls: “I have no doubt that your trip to Rome will be a tremendous success.”

The choir will be conducted by the School’s Director of Music, Peter Collins, who commented: “I am delighted that the girls’ hard work and commitment has resulted in these invitations to sing at such prestigious venues.”
