Plymouth College Vocab Express Global ChallengePlymouth College modern foreign language (MFL) students have won the Challenge Piccolo Cup for French in the Vocab Express Global Challenge.

More than 30,000 students from 200 schools around the world logged on to the online learning application to test their vocabulary knowledge in order to score points towards their individual scoreboard and school league table positions.

Plymouth College scored 88,230, more than 300 points ahead of second placed Northfleet Technology College and nearly 6,000 points more than The Falcons School for Boys in third.  Year 10 pupil, Celeste Dixon was Plymouth College’s highest French scorer with 11,595 points. Jonas Ellerington in Year 11 got the school’s most points in Spanish and the most for the points of the two languages combined.

“I am really pleased to have got the top French score in the school,” said Celeste.  “Over the course of the week of the competition I worked really hard for two hours every evening.  I was able to look at the live score board to see how I was doing against the others so that made me determined to keep going and get as many points as I could!”

The school’s top competitors were presented with certificates at a celebratory lunch of chorizo baguettes, waffles and crepes in the MFL Department.

“This is the first year Plymouth College has taken part in this competition and I am delighted with the results,” said Head of French and Spanish, Philip Randall.  “This was a great way for students to improve their vocabulary and language skills.  They were really motivated to do the best they could and thrived on seeing themselves move up the leader board.  Competitions like this complement the curriculum and help to prepare our students for living and working in a global society.”
