The BBC’s former Royal Correspondent, Jennie Bond, took to the stage at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate near Queen Ethelburgas jennie bondHarrogate to officially open its very own theatre.

Ms Bond, who reported on the Royal Family for 14 years, addressed an assembled audience of pupils and staff and delivered an excellent speech recounting her time in broadcasting.

She said she had been a Buckingham Palace Correspondent during a very turbulent period in the life of the Monarchy and since leaving the BBC has enjoyed trying lots of different broadcasting projects.

“I loved going on ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’ in 2004, because it was such fun,” she said. “I knew when they buried me in a coffin and warned me something was going to come in that it was probably going to be nasty but when 40 or so rats started crawling over me it took a lot of courage to stay in there with them.”

Courage and being challenged were key notes in her speech as she told the students never to “settle in life” and to always face pressures trying their best.

“I’ve done some amazing things, been to some amazing places and met some amazing people and all it of started because I took school seriously and worked hard. Today things are harder for graduates now than they were in my day so getting a good education should be the key to getting success,” she added.

The aptly-named King’s Theatre was designed by the theatre consultant Chris Baldwin. It boasts a 330-seat auditorium, sound and lighting booth and backstage dressing rooms and set storage area.

Ms Bond and the rest of the audience were treated to a performance from the school production of Annie which will be performed in the new theatre at Queen Ethelburga’s in December.
