Today was the first day of our exciting trip round Gambia! Which meant (unfortunately) we had to wake up to a very Queen Ethelburgas Gambia tripearly start!

After being pulled out of bed at 4:45 some of us headed off to the bakery to get breakfast and to get dressed which then lead us to getting on the bus and waiting a extra 30mins for Musa to get on the bus. We began our long journey to inland Gambia!

After going through military control we arrived in a Gambia's capital Banjul, this is where we caught the ferry to Barra. We jumped on busses and were told we'd been on our way in ten minutes (Gambian time) an hour later we set off on our journey to st James island/Kunty Kienty.

We finally arrived and were told to head over to a boat that looked as though it had been glued together with a prittstick.

We all jump onto the boat (which by the time we were all in it, looked like it was about to sink) we arrived in st James island (The Kunta Kinteh Island) where we all had a tour around the slave trade eroded buildings.

We jumped back on the ridiculously small thin boat and headed back to land to enjoy our 'breakfast' at 12noon.

After the food we jumped on the bus and headed for a 4hour journey to the Gambians version of the Stonehenge, Wassu. A common ritual is to place a rock off the floor onto one of the taller rocks and ask the spirits to help us pass our exams, we all did this praying it actually worked.

But before this we had a quick stop at a Fulla Tribe Village. Alot of the people were very moved by this village partly because they showed us were they lived and the conditions were awful but the people were very happy!

The children showed us to where they sleep and all it was a cement block with a few rags, and children as young as 1month sleep on here, it was truly crazy!

We headed to the river were we took little wooden boats across to see the Slave House in George Town then we travelled across the river again to the Bush Hotel.

As we arrived at the hotel everyone was shocked to see scorpions coming out of the tree and a rare type of monkey which was tied to a tree like a dog, it was very sad!

We were shown to our rooms were the beds were very small but luckily we were saved by the Mosquitos nets provided! We had a yummy dinner provided by the 'hotel' and were then entertained by the locals with dancing and music! We all went back to our rooms to try and get some shut eye but very wary of the scorpions outside!:(

We woke up bright and early, 6.15am and were served breakfast by the restraunt were we had the pleasure of omelettes and fried dough ball but known to the Gambians as pancakes! The breakfast was VERY yummy!

The junior leaders got us on the boats ready to watch the Hippos early in the morning. We jumped on the boat and headed down the River Gambia, we had the pleasure of seeing monkeys jumping around the trees on the bank.

WE SAW SOME HIPPOS! Eventually as we travelled down the river, we had our first sight of hippos! We are now chilling in hippo infested water. We are just finishing this blog because the hippos have spotted us and we are now their targets. this might be the last time we write as the hippos will charge the boat! Goodbye cruel world!!!!!…….
