Ratcliffe College Road safety competition Ratcliffe College Junior School is celebrating winning this year’s Design A Road Safety Banner Competition run by local promotional product company and school uniform supplier Recognition Express Leicestershire.

The eye-catching design by Katherine McCrindell, aged seven, was selected from hundreds of entries received from local primary schools, and Katherine was presented with a 2m x 1m size banner of her design to display at the school during Road Safety Week (19-25 November).

Katherine also received a special Star Award for her achievement and the school was presented with 300 high visibility drawstring bags, all donated by Recognition Express.

Mrs Caroline Rigby, head of Ratcliffe College Junior School, said: “Road safety is an important issue for our school and we’re grateful to Recognition Express for this competition, which has provided a fun way of engaging the children about the subject. They have made a huge effort and we think their designs communicate very well the importance of staying safe near roads.”

This is the fourth year running that John Logan, owner of Recognition Express Leicestershire, has joined forces with Brake, the national road safety charity, and invited local pupils aged between 3-13 to design a Road Safety Banner to display at their school.

John said: “This competition is one of the highlights of our year and we really look forward to receiving the children’s designs. The results are always fantastic and we are sure that Katherine’s banner will help to remind passing traffic to slow down.”

Every day on UK roads, 10 children under 19 are killed or seriously hurt on foot or bicycle. Brake’s aim is to prevent road crashes through education and awareness raising programmes with schools, companies and communities across the UK.

Richard Coteau, corporate liaison at Brake said: “Congratulations to Katherine McCrindell and Ratcliffe College Junior School. Their banner design sends a powerful message to traffic and passers-by. We urge all drivers to take notice of Katherine’s advice and keep their speed at 20MPH especially outside schools and in residential areas.”
