Rydal Penhros Tennis Star CrownedA Rydal Penrhos pupil has crowned a hugely successful year by winning the Conwy Junior Sportswoman of the Year award for 2014.

Rydal Penrhos tennis star, Ellie Scarff, was presented with her award by downhill racing cyclist, Manon Carpenter, at a ceremony in Venue Cymru in Llandudno, beating competition from three other finalists and many other nominees.

Ellie’s award comes on the back of an extremely successful year on the tennis courts. During this summer season she won the Welsh Under 16 Championship title and came a very close runner-up in a tight three-set final for the Under 18 crown; a brilliant achievement for a 15 year old.

In October, Ellie competed in her first Under 16s National Tour final in Sunderland and was quarter finalist in the Women’s National Tour competition in Glasgow. Earlier in the year, she represented North Wales as part of the Under 18 County Cup Team. She has just completed the Winter Season Ladies Senior County Cup tournament in Barnstaple where, in a senior competition, she played as their Number 2 ranked player in a team of six.

Within her age group, Ellie is now ranked No. 1 in Wales and 8th in Great Britain and is progressing through the ranks in categories above her age group, having recently been named as 39th of Britain’s Under 18s and 116th in the senior British Women’s Open category.
