Scotland rugby debut for Stonyhurst pupil

Joe Ansbro, who attended Stonyhurst College in the Ribble Valley, made his Scotland debut against South Africa on Saturday 20 November, helping them to beat the world champion Springboks 21-17.

Joe AnsbroUncapped Northampton centre Joe Ansbro replaced the injured Max Evans at outside centre in Scotland's team in the second autumn Test at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Glasgow-born back was thrilled to be selected.

'It's the highlight of my rugby career so far to be called up for a game of this magnitude to represent Scotland,' he explained. 'There's excitement, pride and a few nerves as well – a good mix really!'

Ansbro was brought up near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway and educated at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. Reading Biological Sciences at Cambridge, he went on to play in two Varsity Match wins for Cambridge over Oxford. Simon Charles, Director of Sport at Stonyhurst College said: 'We are all immensely proud of Joe's achievement. He started to play rugby at our Prep School and it has been a pleasure watching this fine young man progress right up to international level.'
