St John's On-The-Hill EclipseOn Friday 20th March, St John’s, along with the rest of the nation, witnessed a partial eclipse of the sun – a very rare event where the moon blocked off nearly 90% of the light from the sun. Pupils were lucky to be able to view the sun by projecting its image onto white backgrounds using our science department’s telescope and binoculars. We were blessed with fine weather for the special occasion; the science department had projections set up for viewing from the start of the eclipse (08:23GMT) until its maximum at 09:29GMT. Each class was able to view the eclipse as it progressed, with all pupils from pre-prep to year 8 outside at the maximum to experience the change in daylight conditions and especially temperature.
This was a great opportunity for the children to experiment with light and experience something they have never felt before. They were really excited and the eclipse and projections did not disappoint! The next total solar eclipse visible in England and Wales will be in 2090, so we’ll see you all then!
