St John's On-The-Hill Science Day CheltenhamA group of budding Year 6 scientists were lucky enough to be invited to the Cheltenham College science afternoon last week. They completed three practical sessions of biology, chemistry and physics.
The first session was chemistry where they created and tested hydrogen gas (by blowing it up, which is always fun), made a battery from a lemon and created their own glow-stick solution! After the chemistry practical, the little scientists moved on to physics, where they were really put through their paces; they had to complete around ten different practical tests, and record their measurements as accurately as possible to try to find the magic number. The practicals involved strobe lighting, oscilloscope testing and focusing images to name just a few. Finally, they visited the biology department, where they had to extract a sample of their own DNA and store it inside a pendant which they were able to take home! This was probably the highlight of the day, although the cake at the end came a close second!
The pupils who attended the day were Alistair Fletcher, Amber Kitcher, Amelia Clarke, Finn Gahan, Jonathan Crane and Olivia Bacon.
