Mayfield’s GCSE girls continue their upward trend

St Leonards-Mayfield has recorded another set of high-quality exam results, with this year’s GCSE students matching the success enjoyed by the A-Level candidates.  Bucking the national trend once more, almost 70% of Mayfield’s GCSE candidates achieved A*-A grades, an increase of over 2% on last year, confirming the upward trend in performance.

Five girls have gained ten or more A* grades. 100% of students gained at least 5 A*-C grades, with excellent results across all subjects – in particular Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography and Physical Education (where no candidate achieved less than a B grade). 93% of candidates in English Literature and 91% of those studying Drama were awarded A*-A grades.

For the first time those Mathematicians who sat their GCSE early, took the Further Maths GCSE level course.  Over 50% were graded at A* with Distinction, indicating exceptional achievement at a level higher than A*.  This confirms the strength in depth of the Mathematics Department and bodes well for the future.

Mrs Sharon Rothero, Mayfield’s Head of Middle School, comments:

“We are delighted that the hard work the girls have put into their studies over the course of the last two years has been rewarded by excellent results. This year group has had an excellent work ethic and have also been great fun to work with. It is particularly pleasing that so many girls have exceeded themselves in subjects that they have previously found difficult – and they should be thrilled.”

There were many outstanding performances. Isabelle Ritchie recorded 11A*s and 2As. Francesca McLaren, Isabelle Kwan and Yolande Rowson each achieved 10A*s and 1 A Tiffany Li achieved 1A* with Distinction, 10 A*s, 1A and 1B. Laura Gilliland gained 7A*s and 5As and Erin Guan 5A*s, 4As and 3Bs.  Wera Ruan gained 1A* with Distinction, 8 A*s, and 1A.  Phoebe Toyne-Bridges registered an A* with Distinction, 7A* and 3As.

Miss Antonia Beary, Mayfield’s Headmistress, comments:

“Mayfield’s GCSE candidates have again produced excellent results and I am immensely proud. The success the girls have enjoyed across both traditional academic and creative subjects is a tribute to the strength and breadth of the teaching within the School. It confirms that our girls are not just learning how to pass examinations but are really making the most of the opportunity a Mayfield education offers.  Inevitably, given the increasingly erratic nature of exam marking, we are looking forward to some girls’ marks improving still further. However, as examination methods and marking change, it is clear that Mayfield girls are ready to respond positively and effectively to any challenge!”

Miss Beary continues:

“Our GCSE girls can now look forward to their AS and A2 years in Mayfield’s magnificent new Sixth Form Centre, following in the footsteps of their successful 2014 predecessors.  They can also continue to enjoy and capitalise on the School’s wealth of extra-curricular opportunities.”
