St Swithun’s School Winchester welcomed Jasvinder Sanghera CBE to talk to the school about her charity Karma Nirvana.

A survivor of a forced marriage, Jasvinder founded Karma Nirvana, a leading national charity hosting the only national dedicated helpline supporting victims of honour crimes and forced marriages. She is also the author of two best-selling books Shame and Daughters of Shame and has recently published Shame Travels.

It was an eye-opening talk for the majority of the audience, who were mostly unaware of the serious issues of forced marriage and honour crimes. Jasvinder drew on her own experience, as well as other girls who have been murdered by their family members, to highlight problems specific to the UK.

Sixth-form pupil Olivia Williams said ‘Jasvinder’s compelling talk left everyone questioning how we can help raise more awareness in schools across the country. Experiencing her passion and commitment to the charity left the audience more mindful of what can be achieved through passion and determination; proven by the first convicted case regarding a forced marriage being charged in Cardiff that very day’.
