Stonyhurst celebrated its strong links with the USA this week, with a visit from the Assistant Cultural Attaché from the US Embassy in London. In a talk attended by the sixth form, alumni, parents and pupils from the US, Michael Prosser outlined the complexity of US relations around the world, and talked about his career in the diplomatic service.

Prospective applicants to American universities were also interested to hear about living and studying in the USA. In honour of its American guests, Stonyhurst flew the Stars and Stripes high above the towers and musicians played the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’.

Stonyhurst educated the only Roman Catholic signatory to the American Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll, as well as John Carroll, founder of Georgetown University in Washington DC. Admissions tutors from this top US university will be visiting Stonyhurst in the autumn. This year, sixth-former Matthew O’Connor gained a place at Harvard.
