Dollar Academy The Junior school pupils at Dollar Academy took water as their theme for this years sustainability study day, hosted at the school on Thursday 16th June.
This annual event was organised by the Science Department and provided a ‘hands-on’ themed day to inspire the school’s young scientists.

In a day of activity, Dollar Junior 1 pupils took part in a global water experiment, which included sampling the Dollar burn water and testing for pH, designing and building water filtration systems, purifying water and researching the water usage of local businesses.

Expert advice was on hand, with representatives from Scottish Environmental Agency (SEPA), who came and spoke to the pupils about our water and where it comes from.

The event coincided with Oxfam’s Water Week, and gave the youngsters the opportunity to learn about sustainability and the Global importance of Water, with perspective from Malindi, the special needs school in Africa supported by Dollar Academy school pupils.
Commenting at the event, Dr Shona Scheuerl , one of Dollar Academy’s chemistry teachers and junior science co-ordinator at the school, said: “This has been a great opportunity for some of our younger pupils to apply scientific techniques and it has been lovely to see such enthusiasm.”
