From the youngest pupils in Sunny Hill Preparatory School through to the independent learners in the Sixth Form, Bruton School for Girls provides an all-round education that develops confidence and self-belief. Enjoyment of learning is encouraged in an atmosphere that nurtures the very best in each individual.
Excellent academic results tell only a small part of the Bruton School for Girls story. There are plenty of opportunities to explore new interests and develop talents. Specialist facilities include the music school with recording studio, the art studios with dedicated sixth-form facilities and darkroom, the professionally equipped studio theatre, the Astroturf, dance studio and heated outdoor swimming pool. Numerous clubs and activities are on offer including Leiths cookery for the Sixth Form.
Girls are challenged to raise their expectations and widen their horizons.
Sports and culture
Art, drama, music and sport feature strongly in extracurricular activities. Art students have showcased their talent at local and regional exhibitions and festivals, and work is displayed throughout the School. Drama, public speaking and theatre studies are offered to all girls, and the School presents several productions each year. For musicians, there are opportunities for choral and instrumental performances, with an orchestra and strings, brass, folk and jazz groups. Our sportswomen frequently represent the county, and compete at national level in activities such as hockey, indoor rowing, swimming, netball, athletics and tennis, as well as
equestrian events.
Boarding at Bruton
Boarding students come from all areas of the country and world. Three on-site boarding houses provide an atmosphere of warmth and security in accommodation that is adapted for each age group. Most GCSE and all sixth-form students have individual study-bedrooms, and sixth-formers enjoy a degree of freedom that provides a bridge between ‘school’ and ‘university’.
Pastoral support
An ethos based on mutual respect fosters a caring environment. Girls are grouped into four halls, with tutors who closely monitor each girl’s academic progress and pastoral needs. In the Sixth Form the tutors assist with university applications and ensure good support of the students’ welfare. Small tutor groups promote self-esteem and motivation. Individual achievement at all levels and in all fields is encouraged and celebrated.
"I was given huge self-belief and self-esteem at Bruton. The School really recognised each of us for what we were good at."
Giselle Mather, former student and Rugby Football Union coach
'The acceptance of one another at this school is something which makes us stand out'
Sophie George, former student
