Farlington School

Farlington educates for confidence. We see the pupils as unique and aim to foster individuality. Neither anonymity nor mediocrity is seen to be an option here. Pupils are confident, well-rounded individuals who show a keen interest in the non-material dimensions of life. They have well-developed social skills and exercise designated responsibilities conscientiously. As a result of exceptional guidance, pupils exhibit outstanding personal development and achieve excellent results.
Farlington is situated four miles west of Horsham in West Sussex, located in a listed building in 33 acres of parkland.

Entry requirements
Entry is by our own examination and interview. Farlington offers means-tested bursaries up to 100% of tuition fees from Year 5. Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport Scholarships are available at Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form.

Academic
Farlington has 365 girls aged from 3 to 18. Academic results are excellent, but the emphasis is on educating the whole child. We nurture the self-esteem and confidence of each individual, ensuring her talents are fully developed. The philosophy of the School is based on Christian principles, but we welcome girls from a wide range of religious and cultural backgrounds.

Curriculum
The Prep School offers an enhanced National Curriculum, with specialist teachers for languages, PE, drama, art and music. Transition from Prep to Senior School is automatic for those girls for whom the curriculum is suitable. Years 7–9 are based on the National Curriculum, but with more challenge and a broader range of subjects. Teaching takes place in tutor groups, though some subjects are set, as appropriate. All girls study French, Spanish and Latin during Years 7 and 8.
In Year 10, girls complete Short Course GCSEs in ICT and Religious Studies. At GCSE, girls study the core subjects and can choose from a further 12 subjects. IGCSE Science is offered as either a double or triple award and we also follow the IGCSE syllabus for Mathematics. A wide range of AS and A2 courses are offered at Sixth Form. Most girls follow four AS courses in the Lower Sixth and three A2 courses in the Upper Sixth, although the programme is flexible. The AQA Baccalaureate is offered; this involves girls studying not only the A-levels of their choice, but also full participation in our extensive programme of enrichment activities, the production of an individual project and the opportunity to study AS-level General Studies. The Extended Project Qualification is popular and our acceptance rate at top universities is high. There are many avenues for self-expression in art, music, drama, and sport, through an extensive range of extracurricular activities. Lower Sixth girls take part in Young Enterprise and Voluntary Service; pupils regularly achieve the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
We offer an EAL (English as an additional language) programme for foreign students, leading to all levels of examination.

Boarding
There are 40 boarders in our comfortable and friendly boarding house, where there is a genuine family feel. Full, weekly and flexi-boarding is offered, with the girls enjoying an imaginative and wide-ranging choice of trips and activities. Younger boarders are accommodated in three dormitories with up to six beds; senior girls have double or single rooms.

Sixth Form students enjoyed a fascinating visit to the National Portrait Gallery in February to see the current Lucien Freud exhibition. Freud was famed for his naked full-length portraits which used layers of oils to depict the sitter’s flesh in minute detail – creating unforgiving and often unflattering images.

Scholarship and Bursary Information

Bursaries
The School offers means tested bursaries up to 100% of tuition fees for all prospective and current pupils from Year 5 upwards.

The main bursary award process is carried out in the first half of the Spring Term and applications, therefore, should be made in the second half of the preceding autumn term.

Subject to available funds, applications for bursaries will be considered at other times of the year, on a half-termly basis if parental circumstances change unexpectedly.

Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded on merit. There is no automatic fee reduction for scholarship awards; instead there is an automatic study support grant of £100 per term, payable directly to the Scholar in Years 7-11. This increases to £200 at Sixth Form. Scholarships will be held for the duration of the girl’s time at Farlington, subject to annual review.

There will be an enrichment programme for, and public recognition of, Scholars, and all girls who maintain their scholarships until they leave after A levels will be further acknowledged on their final Speech Day.

Scholarships are available at three points of entry in the Senior School:

Entry into Year 7: Examination in January

Academic, Music, Sport, Drama and Art Scholarships are available. Both internal and external candidates need to apply for Music, Sport and Drama Scholarships. Candidates should be registered and entered by the first Friday in the preceding December. All girls who sit the Entrance Examination in January will automatically be considered for Academic Scholarships so there is no need to apply for these.

Entry into Year 9: Examination in January
Academic, Music, Drama, Sport and Art Scholarships are available to both internal and external candidates who will need to apply in all cases. Candidates should be registered and entered by the first Friday in the preceding December.
