Founded in 1934 by Dr Kurt Hahn, Gordonstoun, a fully co-educational boarding school, provides a broad educational programme for students aged 8–18 years. Set on a large, magnificent estate in Moray, it is within three hours’ travel from central London and close to international airports. The curriculum and distinctive ethos is driven by the School motto, ‘Plus est en vous’ – ‘There is more in you’.
The arts and sports
At Gordonstoun we take pride in our holistic approach to the education of our students. All students are stretched by the combination of academic, outdoor, cultural and sporting challenges offered as an integral part of our programme. Gordonstoun, therefore, welcomes applications for Sixth Form Scholarships from candidates with skills in any one or more of these categories. The strengths of the School, in conventional terms and judged by its special ethos, are well known and laid out in our publicity material.
Academic Scholarships
Candidates will be expected to give evidence of their ability to embark upon a two-year Sixth Form course with the prospect of obtaining at least three very good passes at GCE A level.
The examination, which takes place at Gordonstoun, will form the foundation of the assessment process. This is in three parts with each candidate taking written papers in English and Mathematics. Copies of past papers are not available. Initial selection of potential candidates will be made following the receipt of reports obtained from their current Headteacher. The successful applicants will then be invited to come to Gordonstoun for the remainder of the Scholarship procedure. This process will also include practical problem solving exercises and interviews with senior members of the Gordonstoun Staff
Scholarships in Art, Design Technology, Drama, Information Technology, Music and Sport
Candidates will be expected to show suitability for a Gordonstoun education and to have both pronounced talent, and a high level of achievement, in one of the following fields : Art, Design Technology, Drama, Information Technology, Music and Sport. Candidates are not expected to sit the academic scholarship papers but will need to qualify for the School in the normal way (School report, interview and a place offered conditionally upon obtaining satisfactory GCSE grades) and will be expected to have the potential to make a major contribution to School life. Interviews will take place at Gordonstoun and auditions for Music awards take place at that time also. Fuller details of what is required in each area are enclosed.
All-Round Scholarships
These are for candidates who demonstrate a high level of ability and potential in several areas. It is possible to apply for consideration for an All Round Scholarship as well as an Academic Scholarship or one of those awarded for specialist skills.
Value of Scholarships
Several Scholarships are awarded each year; their normal value is 10% of the fees, with the possibility of this amount being increased, in some cases substantially, in cases of financial need. The Scholarships are for the duration of the Sixth Form and are subject to review each year in the light of progress in all aspects of School life.
Bursaries for Sons and Daughters of Royal Navy or Merchant Navy Personnel and other Service Bursaries
Bursaries may be available to the sons or daughters of current or former Royal Navy or Merchant Navy personnel through the Heath Jary Sheridan Paterson Trust. Candidates need not take the academic scholarship papers but qualify for admission through school report and interview.
In all cases, awards may be augmented on the basis of financial circumstances.
Externally Funded Scholarships
The School has been fortunate in recent years to receive funding from an external Charitable Trust for Scholarships to be awarded at Sixth Form level to candidates who show outstanding qualities of Leadership. Parents and candidates may not request consideration for these awards but Gordonstoun may wish to propose particular candidates involved in the Scholarship competition, and who have taken the Scholarship papers, to the Charitable Foundation for consideration. The value of each Scholarship will be up to half fees, but exact amounts will be determined by the Trust once it has examined financial statements made by the parents of the nominated and approved candidates.
The school also has awards made to its potential students by another Charitable Trust, which specifically supports those taking Science at A level. These are to the value of 50% of the day fee or, approximately, 25% of the boarding fee.
Sixth Form Curriculum
Gordonstoun follows the English examination system. Most students will elect to study three A-levels (A2) and one further subject at AS level. Strong Mathematicians will often take Further Mathematics and non-native speakers are encouraged to take their home language as an extra fourth A-level.
The School also prepares suitable students for the Oxford and Cambridge entrance procedures and for SAT entrance to universities in the USA.
Candidates may choose from the following list of subjects which will be offered in the Sixth Form.
