Hethersett Old Hall School
Established in 1938, Hethersett Old Hall School is a friendly day and boarding school in Norfolk countryside, just minutes from Norwich city. The School is co-ed between ages 4 and 11, and the Senior School and Sixth Form are single sex for girls between ages 11 and 18. Boarding is also single sex, for girls aged 9 to 18.

Ethos
The small, close-knit school offers a happy, supportive environment in which each pupil can develop their academic, creative and practical skills.

Entrance requirements and results
The School welcomes pupils with a range of abilities who can follow the main curriculum taught to their age group. It offers scholarships, bursaries and discounts for HM Forces and clergy families. The School’s nurturing approach enables pupils to fulfil their academic potential without undue pressure. Excellent exam results are proof that the caring and individual approach works. Since 2007, 100% of our girls have gained places at their first choice universities.

International study options
The School’s ESOL department provides support and tuition to international pupils, helping them prepare for ESOL examinations and qualifications including the Cambridge Board PET, FCE and CAE, IELTS and SAT, plus GCSEs, AS- and A-levels. We can accept international pupils for periods as short as half a term.

Extracurricular activities
Activities include the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Young Enterprise Scheme, drama productions, music concerts, sporting fixtures and an annual ski trip.

The School’s main building is a Georgian house set in 16 acres of beautiful grounds; the School also has modern Pre-Prep and Junior departments and teaching blocks on site, housing ICT suites, science laboratories and an extensive art wing. Sports facilities include an indoor pool, sports hall, tennis courts and sports fields. Drama is performed in The Barn and there is a dedicated music block.

Boarding
The School welcomes UK and international boarders and offers full, weekly and flexi-boarding. Boarding staff are experienced and offer high-quality pastoral care. The small boarding community means that boarders receive plenty of attention, settle quickly and soon feel part of the ‘family’. Younger pupils share dorms with two or three girls whilst older students have their own bedrooms. All boarders make use of the School’s facilities and take part in a varied programme of organised activities in the evenings and at weekends.

This award was based on a practical test and a written piece on a sporting hero. The school’s head of P.E. commented: ‘Lilyella was awarded a scholarship because of her skills as a really talented all-rounder with the potential to go further’.

Case study – Patricia

My main reason for coming to the UK was to improve my English and get the necessary qualifications to study at a UK university. My mother knew somebody whose daughter was already at HOHS, and she recommended it as a good place of study for my sister and me. We came here in October 2010; my sister is in Year 10 and I am in Year 13 and we are both full boarders at school.

Luckily, the daughter of my mother’s friend was very helpful by showing me everything and explaining the routine. The staff were also very welcoming and I felt it was OK to ask them anything I was not sure about.

It was not my first experience of boarding, but that was not in the UK and things are totally different here. I cannot say it was easy at first but things improved gradually, and I now feel I know my way around. It is nice being part of a small community and the boarding accommodation is comfortable and warm.

There are some nice social activities at the school such as pantomime, cinema and roller-skating visits, as well as activities organised at school e.g. tie-dying and cookery.

I attend church every Sunday morning and this is an important activity for me. I speak to my mother most days by phone. My sister, however, uses Skype a lot to keep in touch with her family and friends. My mother has been to the school a couple of times and it was really good that she could meet my teachers and see my surroundings, which are beautiful with green fields and clean fresh air.

As I am only here for one year, I am concentrating on my English studies and I have six hours of one to one lessons a week. I have already taken the IELTS test and was delighted to reach a score of 7 which will really help my university applications. My teacher and I prepared really well for the exam and she took me to the exam centre where I had a full Saturday of tests.

I am now studying for two more English language exams: the Cambridge First Certificate, which I am taking in Cambridge in May, and the IGCSE in English as a Second Language which I will also take in May. I am never bored and I know I will gain the maximum benefit from my time here.

My other subjects are AS Spanish, photography, art and AS English. I am very happy with my timetable because it is well balanced. I hope that this time next year I will be studying Ancient History and Archaeology at university, hopefully either Cardiff or Durham. The best things about being here are the opportunities to improve my English, try out different subjects and explore English life and culture. Personally my time at HOHS has been great! I am glad I made the choice to come here and I will never forget it.
