There is a sport for every boy at Merchiston
There is a long and successful tradition of sport at Merchiston, with equal emphasis on recreation and excellence. Within fantastic facilities, there are over 20 sports on offer which cater for all interests and levels of ability. As one of the leading innovators of sports education in the UK, the School established Scotland’s first tennis academy in 2007 and more recently its own golf academy. The School is currently represented at national and international level in many sports including athletics, cricket and rugby.

Stipendien
Stipendien werden für die Altersstufen von 10 bis 16 Jahren – besonders für Schüler ab 13 Jahren, die von der Vorbereitungsschule kommen – in den Hauptkategorien Wissenschaft, Sport und
Musik (einschließlich der Piping-Ausstellung) sowie für Generalisten vergeben. Stipendien in den Bereichen Design & Technologie sowie Kunst sind für Schüler ab 13 Jahren erhältlich. Internationale Stipendien gibt es für Schüler aus Europa, Kenia und Hongkong. Merchiston unterstützt ebenfalls die von der Schulleiterkonferenz (HMC) geförderten Projekte der ost- und mitteleuropäischen Stipendienprogramme. Das Gemeindestipendium (nur für das PLZ-Gebiet Edinburgh) und das Laidlaw-Stipendium werden in Form von einkommensabhängigen Förderhilfen gewährt. Scholarships
Scholarships grant honour to the recipient and may, in addition, carry a fee concession. The level of concession depends upon a boy’s ability, the number of awards made in each year and financial need. Some means-tested bursaries are also available.

Getting to know us
There is a wide range of ways to get to know our School. Here are some of the key options.
Personal tours: The best way to get to know the School is by coming to visit us. There is absolutely no obligation to take your enquiry further after a visit. On a personal tour you will be shown around the School, have an introductory discussion with a senior member of staff appropriate to your enquiry, and get to meet some of the boys. The best time to see around is in the morning during term time, when you can meet staff and pupils in class. A personal tour normally takes about two hours. Please contact the Admissions Department or fill in the form.
'Taster' Visits: In addition to a tour, your son may like to spend some time at the School himself, to experience something of life at Merchiston. A 'Taster' visit does not imply any commitment on your part to your son joining the School. This usually involves a day spent here. Please contact the Admissions Department for further details, or to arrange a visit.
Information Mornings: Our Information Mornings are held three times a year. The mornings provide an opportunity for families to make an informal visit to see the School in action and to meet pupils and teaching staff. Coffee is served in the Memorial Hall from 10 am followed by a welcome address from the Headmaster. Sixth Form pupils give tours of the School, and a buffet lunch is served from 12.30 pm. Other opportunities to visit: In addition to the above, parents and their families are also welcome to visit us at School events. These include concerts, some chapel services, theatrical productions, and the Merchiston Rugby Sevens tournament. Each year we hold a Science and Technology Day to which we invite Prep School and Primary school children. For parents, there may be opportunities to attend parents' dinners or our Commemoration Day Service and celebrations. Merchiston is also pleased to welcome members of the public for historical tours through the Edinburgh Cockburn Society, and the Edinburgh Open Doors scheme. During the morning (10 a.m. until 1 p.m.), you will have an opportunity to look round the School, meet the Headmaster and his wife, as well as teaching staff and some pupils. There will be a short presentation about different aspects of the School. Most importantly, you will be able to speak to boys about their lives at School, and we are sure that they will be happy to give you some interesting insights of their own!
