Queen Ethelburga's College

Queen Ethelburga’s College

Queen Ethelburga’s is ranked as the North of England’s academically most successful, independent co-educational day and boarding school. Over 98% of Year 13 left to go to the best universities.
Our campus is exceptional, set in over 100 acres of manicured country park in the Vale of York. Our supporting Charitable Foundation maintains a range and quality of facilities few can equal, with over £65m invested in new resources in recent years including our new sports centre and a refurbishment of boarding accommodation. The sports centre also boasts five gymnasiums, five tennis courts, volleyball courts, rugby pitches, cricket pitches, hockey pitches, football pitches, climbing wall and more!

The College operates a comprehensive daily bus service from a wide area covering York, Leeds, Harrogate, Wetherby, Thirsk and surrounding villages – eight different routes and 45 pick-up points. Our boarding accommodation is considered by many to be the best of any independent school in the UK and Europe.

Sixth Form at Queen Ethelburga’s is much more than a two-year study course. It is a time to build the bridge from youth to adulthood, school to higher education and a career. It is a time for tackling a deeper involvement in the community and learning to value well-earned privileges, as well as taking on additional roles in the running of the school and the organisation of House activities. We offer a wide range of Sixth Form courses, all of which require a high level of commitment, a willingness to research information and a genuine interest in the subject.

Students can opt for four or five A-levels, or BTEC courses or a mix of BTEC courses and A-levels. Recent Sixth Formers have gone on to Oxbridge as well as other prestigious universities.
Established in 1912, Queen Ethelburga’s has enjoyed one of the longest and most successful equestrian and school partnerships in the country. A brand-new £1m Equestrian Centre is now open, with an Olympic-sized indoor arena, five acres of all-weather, floodlit outdoor arenas, exercise arenas, gallop track, three all-weather, floodlit cross-country style circuits, and stabling for over 60 horses. Students can make full use of these facilities, riding opportunities and receive tuition by approved (British Horse Society – BHS) professionally qualified instructors. We also organise horse shows, one-day horse trials and events, go to local competitions and national equine shows.

The Royal Court Equestrian Centre is considered by many to be one of the finest in Europe at any independent school, where you also have the opportunity to use a BHS-approved riding and examination centre with superb facilities. Should boarders wish to bring their own horses to school, they will enjoy our stabling and livery of superb quality.
Students past and present are living proof of the school’s commitment to them as individuals, and with dedicated, caring staff the school provides them with both the necessary education and practical abilities.

Chapter House Junior School
Boys and girls kindergarten to Year 6

Our Junior School is friendly and small, but very successful academically. We have recently spent over £1m upgrading all our Junior School facilities. We accept children with a range of abilities and have our own dedicated staff on hand to offer extra help when necessary for children with dyslexia. You will not be able to appreciate the difference a huge investment in new state-of-the art facilities can make to ensure children get a brilliant start and do well, until you have a look for yourself. We have yet to find another junior school that is so wonderfully equipped and where so much thought has gone into making children’s education brilliantly fun and rewarding.

With all this help at hand, paired with the great facilities on offer, our Junior children move ahead quickly and perform well. There is also plenty of time for fun, sport, drama, music, games, storytelling and art – the list of available activities and clubs is almost endless.

King’s Magna Middle School
Boys and girls Year 6 to Year 9
We have much smaller class sizes than other schools, enabling us to devote extra time and energy to ensuring that children, of all levels of ability, achieve outstanding results.
In our recent SAT 2 Key Stage examinations children did, on average, 50% better than those in state schools.
As we share our campus with the Senior School, the range of sports and activities we can do is huge and we offer a wide range of after-school activities and weekend trips. We pride ourselves on being a very happy school – every child matters and this shows in what our pupils achieve.

A Family community
The school staff really care about our pupils and will go out of their way to help them. However, on occasion, sensible and fair discipline puts a wayward young person back on course if necessary. In essence, our community is a family.
To attempt to define our ethos into areas is almost impossible; suffice to say that being a little different, and so special, works very successfully. The school has a high reputation locally, a commitment to local community schemes, a good record in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, a thriving Combined Cadet Force and offers a wide and interesting range of extracurricular activities. With both the historical city of York and Harrogate in the vicinity, full use is made of the cultural amenities. All in all, exciting times ahead for this famous independent school, as it celebrates its 100th birthday

Our philosophy
• To offer all pupils a broad and balanced curriculum.
• To treat all pupils as individuals.
• To strive for academic excellence.
• To promote self-confidence, independence and co-operation.
• To foster a spirit of enquiry.
• To encourage self-discipline and a high standard of behaviour.
• To provide a happy and stimulating environment for study.
• To prepare pupils for further education and working environments.
• To encourage physical and mental fitness.
• To promote community and global awareness.
• To equip pupils with technological expertise.
• To provide a safe and secure environment in which pupils thrive.

'To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have.'
