A note from the Head Master
School should be serious fun. A good school should offer a safe but challenging environment in which its pupils learn about themselves,
develop resilience, confidence and a sense of where they want to go in life. St Peter’s is a forward-looking school with a long and distinguished history
extending back to 627 AD. We believe in providing an education that lasts. Of course, this means getting good exam results and going on to the right universities, but, above all, we want our pupils to work hard and enjoy learning for learning’s sake. We want them to be grounded and able to think for themselves, care for others and take a genuine interest in the world beyond the School.

We benefit greatly from our setting in 47 acres on the banks of the River Ouse, a few minutes’ walk from the lively, historic centre of York. As a co-educational day and boarding school with superb facilities, we provide an enriching and inclusive community life.

We offer an inspiring curriculum, excellent sport, and abundant opportunities to do, make, perform and create.
Adolescence can be an uncertain, choppy sea and, however intrepid our youngsters are, they need islands of certainty: our caring teaching and pastoral staff support and guide our pupils along the way. Together, we deliver a dynamic, all-round education that is founded on the wisdom of the ages, preparing them for an active and purposeful future.

Sport
Our sports programme aims to promote a healthy lifestyle with participation by all. A wide range of activities is available including rugby football, hockey, netball, tennis, cricket and rowing. Other options include athletics, badminton, basketball, climbing, cross-country, fencing, squash, swimming, weight training, trampolining and aerobics. The excellent sports facilities include two sports centres, a gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool, extensive playing fields, a boathouse and tennis courts.

Music, art and drama
Music at St Peter’s is thriving both as a subject area and as a favourite ‘other activity’. It is our belief that every child can and should be visually literate, and we encourage our students to develop their powers of visual awareness and creativity in our outstanding Art department. Drama is also thriving, with an annual major production.

Life as a boarder
The boarding ethos of the School is vital to the wellbeing of St Peter’s. Boarding provides a focus for the community and ensures that both the boarding and day pupils benefit from a caring and well-structured pastoral system. The boarding houses provide the School with a living community seven days a week. The four boarding houses, with their resident houseparents and families, are cheerful and caring environments.
Based in the heart of York, boarding pupils have easy access to the activities and amenities offered by one of the UK’s loveliest cities, ensuring that the hours outside school are varied and stimulating.

Location
Situated on the banks of the Ouse within sight of the Minster, St Peter’s, including Clifton Pre-Prep and St Olave’s Prep School, is a wonderful place for young people to grow and develop. The city of York has some of the richest history in the UK. It is a safe and friendly city, with numerous attractions including the world-famous Jorvik Viking Centre; York’s Sweet Story, focusing on our chocolate industry; the National Railway Museum; and numerous galleries and museums reflecting York’s heritage as the former Roman capital of northern England.

Yorkshire encompasses some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, from stunning sandy beaches to woodland and moorland.Located in the city centre, St Peter’s is easily accessed by road, rail and air. London and Manchester Airport are just two hours away by train, and the School is ten minutes from York station. We provide transport to Leeds Bradford International Airport, less than an hour away.

St Peter’s acknowledges all different kinds of talents.

SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES
As part of our long term commitment to making the school accessible to children whose families cannot fund some, or all, of the school fees a limited number of means tested bursaries are available at St Peter’s and St Olave’s.

Bursaries may be awarded as a discount off both day and boarding fees. They typically range between 50-100% and are made on the basis of the St Peter’s Bursary Scale which sets out Bursary Levels in relation to financial circumstances including income, outgoings, savings and assets owned (including the family home).

Although academic excellence is not the only criterion which is used to assess eligibility, the child must pass the schools’ Entrance Examinations. The Head Master will also consider those pupils who would gain particular benefit from attending St Olave’s / St Peter’s and who would contribute fully to the School community.

Bursaries are available to pupils entering St Olave’s or St Peter’s at any point from Year 7 upwards. They are also available to existing pupils from Year 7 / J4 at St Olave’s.

Applications for support should be received by the last day of the Christmas term. Applications for entry in September 2012 have now closed. For further information on making an application for entry in September 2013, contact Gillian Daniels in the Admissions Office.
