Uppingham School

UK Boarding Schools - Uppingham School
Uppingham School is a full-boarding school for boys and girls aged 13–18. Established in 1584, the School has around 760 pupils and is situated in a small market town in a beautiful part of central England, about 100 miles north of London and midway between Leicester and Peterborough.  There are immense rewards in terms of academic and social development to be gained from the Uppingham experience.  In addition to the School’s strong commitment to music, drama, art, design and technology, and sports, high academic standards are a priority.

Living
Central to a pupil’s life at Uppingham is their boarding house. There are 15 houses, which are dotted around the town and School estate: nine for boys (ages 13–18), four for girls (ages 13–18) and two for sixth-form girls only. The house is where pupils eat, sleep, work, socialise and feel they belong. Houses are kept relatively small, and are usually home to between 50 and 60 children (45 in the case of the sixth-form girls’ houses).

Learning
With a staff:pupil ratio of almost 1:7, all subjects enjoy the benefit of small class sizes.  The curriculum begins with a broad range of subjects, which are then used as a basis upon which to build gradual specialization.   A wide range of subjects is taught: 28 different A-level subjects and 21 GCSE subjects are offered.  In 2007, 51% of all A-levels were A grades, and 83.3% A or B.  At GSCE the pass rate was 99.4% (A-C).

Growing upUK Boarding Schools - Uppingham School

Children change enormously between 13 and 18. In a good boarding school, individual development takes place against a backdrop of challenge and responsibility. Pupils are guided through Uppingham by their housemaster or housemistress, an assigned tutor and pastoral figures within the School community, to help ensure their progress both academically and as individuals.

Facilities
Uppingham pupils are fortunate to live and learn in inspiring surroundings and the School has an extensive range of excellent facilities.

• The Arts: Three Music Schools, the most recent of which is a state-of-the-art facility including a 100-seat recital room and recording studios, and this addition brings the total number of practice rooms to 60.  A 300-seat Theatre and a new £1.6m drama studio consisting of a foyer, two new drama classrooms, a workshop space and a state-of-the-art drama studio designed to provide a flexible performance space.   An award-winning Art, Design & Technology Centre.

• Sport: Sports Hall, indoor swimming pools, gymnasium, weights room, tennis, netball, squash and fives courts, three Astroturf surfaces (one floodlit), a hard play area for hockey, shooting range and approx. 60 acres of playing fields.

• IT: 2622 network outlets, every study and bedsit has a networked PC, and pupils have PC access at various locations around the School.

Statement from the Head
There are very few real boarding schools left.  We are one of them.  If full boarding is what you want we believe we are among the best, especially if you are also interested in the extra-curricular side (spectacular music, art and drama).

‘If you are willing to be helped and guided, there is virtually nothing you cannot achieve here.’
