School Information

A visit to Windermere School or a look at our website tells you this is a very
special place indeed. Our stunning location, in the heart of England’s Lake
District, has been the inspiration for world-famous artists, poets, and authors,
a sanctuary and the antidote to congested city life, a fascination to scientists,
a home for adventurers as well as part of the masterpiece of human creative
genius that affords us UNESCO World Heritage status. It is a daily inspiration
to every one of us fortunate enough to call it our school.Schools are what we
build together and the Windermere community is as special as the place itself.
Every child is different, talented, and unique and every individual matters. Here
their differences are respected, their talents developed and their individuality
encouraged. Our staff are dedicated to bringing out the very best in everyone
and our examination results, university destinations, and the confidence of our
pupils bear testimony to this commitment.

The beauty of our location, expertise of our staff, and wealth of facilities
are enhanced by our size. Windermere is a deliberately small school. Pupils
are known and cherished for who they are, every family is a vital part of our
community and the voices of everyone are heard. Our classes are small,
our pupils are happy, our education is bespoke and the results are stunning.
In the latest inspection report by the ISI, Windermere School received the
highest grades for the quality of the education provided; it was recognised
as ‘Excellent’ for both categories: academic and other achievements, and
personal development.

The School comprises three campuses: Elleray, Browhead and Hodge Howe.
Hodge Howe is our own RYA (Royal Yachting Association) accredited Water
Sports Centre and boathouse on the shores of Lake Windermere. In 2018,
the School was chosen to become a British Youth Sailing Recognised Club
by the Royal Yachting Association for its race training and is one of only two
schools in the UK to receive this.It is a rare privilege to be part of a school with
Windermere’s history and potential. We invite you to take a closer look and
would be delighted to welcome you and your family to our school.

Junior School (3-11 years)
This is where the adventure begins for boys and girls between the ages of
3 and 11. This designated campus is located in the most idyllic of settings,
high above Windermere, on the wooded slopes overlooking the lake and the
Langdale Valley beyond, providing each child with the space to flourish. With
adventurous learning at the heart of our provision, children learn vital skills
that they take back into the classroom, and through life. Whether they are
taking part in Forest School, Adventure lessons, performing on our outdoor
stage, or studying wind speeds at the top of Orrest Head, there is always
challenge, fresh air and enjoyment. Children from the Lake District have been
educated at the Elleray Campus for over a century, together with boarders
who join us from all over the world. There is a warmth, vibrancy and kindness
at Elleray that makes it a very special place to learn and grow.

Lower and Middle School (11-16 years)
Our Lower and Middle School, located on the Browhead Campus, provides
a safe, nurturing environment for children as they enter the first stages of
their secondary education. The first years of secondary education can bring
mixed feelings, excitement, anticipation and uncertainty. At Windermere
School, pupils settle in to secondary education with confidence, allowing
their academic ability and personalities to prosper. The Senior School has
a 50/50ratio of boys to girls, and a similar ratio of boarding to day pupils.
Browhead is the hub of School activity, with girls’ boarding facilities located
upstairs, Crampton Hall, the library, computer rooms and administration
offices downstairs. Langdale House, our boys’ boarding facility, provides an
excellent space for boy boarders, with a junior and senior common room for
all pupils to enjoy.

Preparatory Senior
Sixth Form (16-18 years)
Our Sixth Form centre, also located on the Browhead Campus, accepts
students as both day pupils and boarders and offers a university-style
boarding environment for both living and learning. The rich literary and
cultural heritage of the Lake District together with the great outdoors
provide an inspirational setting for study, self-discovery and enjoyment.
The ethos of sixth-form life for students is reflected in their study facilities,
accommodation and responsibilities. All students have study bedrooms
or study facilities in Westmorland House, a purpose-built sixth-form
complex. Students live in flats with single and double studybedrooms, sitting
room and a bathroom. Exceptional pastoral support and a broad activity
programme enhance the high academic standards achieved by the students.

Curriculum
We are a non-selective school and our mission is to prepare pupils for life
in a competitive, global and ever-changing world through a challenging
academic curriculum which is enhanced by opportunities to learn outside
in our unique natural environment. Our goal is to ensure that all of our
pupils achieve excellence that is beyond their own expectations. Small
class sizes and highly-skilled staff are dedicated to our educational ethos of
‘Experiential Learning’. This ensures that studying is an interactive process for
all pupils. Today’s education has to be more than just academic. We believe
that outdoor learning has a significant impact on our pupils both in academic
achievement and overall wellbeing. The School’s beautiful location enhances
our unique approach and we consistently deliver high academic standards.

GCSE and IGCSE subjects
In Years 10 and 11, all students study English Language, English Literature,
Mathematics and a Modern Foreign Language (French, Spanish) for
examinations at the end of Year 11. Students may take some GCSEs or IGCSEs
in Year 10 and the remainder in Year 11. IGCSEs and GCSEs are offered.Year
11. We accept entry into Year 11 as preparation for the IB Diploma, which is
very popular for our international students. Five GCSE subjects are studied to
qualify for the IB Diploma in Sixth Form.

Windermere School boasts three fantastic boarding houses that stand in
the beautiful Lakeland grounds of the School. Windermere boarders are
never short of things to do, with access to the lake, evening events and a
fully developed programme of activities to both local and national places of
interest. The School’s inclusive ethos also allows for students from age eight
upwards to be made to feel welcome in a unique and homely environment.

housemasters and housemistresses. Windermere School is only 90 minutes

and, as a member of a network of schools across the world known as Round
Square, we are also committed to internationalism, democracy, adventure,
environmental conservation, leadership and service.

opportunities for students during the School’s timetabled curriculum and as
part of the extracurricular activity programme. The centre has accreditation
from the British Canoeing and the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority,
as well as being an RYA Teaching Centre and BYS Recognised Club. The

Scholarships and Bursaries

We are proud to offer Scholarships for students entering Years 7, 9 and 12 Windermere School has a number of awards to recognise excellence in a particular field, and these are available to students joining the school in Year 7, Year 9, and Year 12. Each year, we attract high-calibre applicants who enrich the school not only in their specialist fields, but also in all areas of school life. At Windermere School, scholarships are awarded as recognition of both excellent previous achievement and potential for further development. Our aim is to provide each student with the encouragement, support, and guidance they need to develop their talents and excel in their specialist area. Windermere School is committed to the development of Scholars, through tailored provision and support in their area of specialism throughout their school career.  In return, Scholars and award holders are expected to maintain the highest standards, representing the school, in order to enhance the academic, sporting, and creative life of the school.  For more detail about the provision in each area, please refer to the Scholarships leaflet. The Cumbria Award is specifically for pupils attending a state maintained primary school within Cumbria who would benefit from the educational experience offered by Windermere School.  It is designed to assist those pupils whose family circumstances would make this unattainable without a means-tested reduction of school fees (day or boarding) by at least 75%. Both Scholarships and Bursaries give financial assistance. Scholarship awards are given on the basis of excellence; a bursary can be given in recognition of financial need.
