Maths problems that don’t add up

During the Cultural Hour on Monday, over 80 5th and 6th formers attended an engaging talk in Main Hall on the Greatest Unsolved Problems in Maths.9357-729932

The talk was given by Dr Katie Steckles, a mathematician based in Manchester. Since gaining her PhD, she has travelled the country to talk about maths in schools, at science festivals, on BBC radio, at music festivals and on the world famous Numberphile channel.

Katie took the audience through problems involving prime numbers, pentagons and Pascal’s triangle. She also gave a virtuoso demonstration of pancake flipping and explained the mathematics involved.

The talk ended with a discussion of number of the problems that are still perplexing the greatest minds in mathematics today.
