The Oundle School Lower Sixth Form ‘Work in Progress’ Art Exhibition is currently on display at the Yarrow Gallery on Glapthorn Road, Oundle. The exhibition opened with a lecture given by Jane McAdam Freud on Monday 20th February and will close on Sunday 5th March.

20170220 Yarrow Society with Jane McAdam Freud Lecture 013Art teacher, Caroline Dent commented, “The aim of this exhibition is to give visitors the chance to see how the pupil artists work; from conception to creation. It highlights the School’s strong culture of experimentation, innovation and debate. Within a dynamic and vibrant environment that encourages risk, originality and diversity in thinking, pupils are encouraged to challenge and develop their ideologies and practice both collaboratively and independently. The exhibition is a tantalising chance to see the artists in the middle of this creative process.”

The exhibition provides an opportunity for pupils to share their work, learning more about each other’s techniques and enabling them to gauge a broader range of responses to their ongoing artistic practice. For visitors it is a wonderful way to see the artists of the future as their newest creations take shape.”

The layout of the exhibition is not one of polished and final pieces but visually rich working practice in progress.

On Monday 20th February, to celebrate the start the exhibition, the pupils gathered within the Yarrow Gallery, alongside the internationally acclaimed sculptor and multi-disciplinary artist Jane McAdam Freud, to take part in a group review. This unique experience gave each pupil the opportunity to receive constructive feedback from Mrs McAdam Freud. Discussion on working practice, materials used and reflection on the purpose and ideas behind the work was debated, acting a springboard for future development.

Lower Sixth Form pupil artist, Holly Telfer (16) commented, “Jane provided her opinion on my ideas, helping me to see them from a different perspective. It was intriguing hearing the ideas of a professional who has so much experience in the field. She provided me with a deeper understanding, helping me to look into the meaning of my work, and to recognise this is as important as the piece itself.”

Art Teacher, Genny King commented, “I thoroughly enjoyed Jane’s enthusiasm and encouragement. I felt she responded very sensitively to the pupils and was immensely generous with her feedback; the pupils have said they benefitted greatly, with new ideas in the bag and experiments they wish to try. On a personal level I was really fascinated with her ‘text work’ and it reminded me greatly of my own BA and MA work, which I have lost track of but wish to return to. She showed us that the artist does not need to be sat on a plinth and be revered like ‘proper art’. They can respond and react in human ways, develop ideas in all manner of directions and work in ways that don’t involve old or traditional ideals – and live it successfully. She was everything I wasn’t expecting her to be; very accessible, very engaging and respectful of both formal and less traditional working modes.”

Later that evening, Jane McAdam Freud presented an energised and engaging talk to the Yarrow Society on ‘Object Conversation’ which was attended by the Sixth Form Artists and Art Historians.

Caroline Dent concluded, “The two events were thoroughly enjoyed by all, while raising the importance of the Arts within the School community.”
