Very Able Pupils experience ‘Felspell School of Magic’

40 pupils from across the county were invited to Felsted Preparatory School for a Very Able Pupil (VAP) Day. The children attended Science workshops aimed at meeting and extending the needs of more able pupils in Year 5.

Elm Green VAP at FelstedForget Hogwarts! The children were welcomed to ‘Felspell School of Magic, Witchcraft and Wizardry’. Pupils learnt about the ‘Magic Metal Magnesium’ in their Potions Class. They gained an understanding of reactions in their charms class, using chemicals to reveal and send secret messages. They also learnt about acids and alkalis with the help of the ‘Plant of Possibilities’ in Herbology.

Very Able Pupils Co-ordinator, Mrs Christina Bury, commented: “We are delighted to host these days at Felsted for more able pupils. They provide an exciting and unique opportunity for like-minded children from across the county to extend their knowledge and understanding of key scientific principles. ”

Commenting on the day, one parent of a VAP commented “The activities were captivating for my daughter as well as being instrumental in developing her scientific knowledge. Thank you Felsted for organising and hosting this event – she really did have an amazing and magical day!”

In addition to holding a Primary Science Quality Mark Gold Award, Felsted School are also accredited with the NACE Challenge Award, given for challenging all pupils, especially those with high abilities, to achieve their best. Felsted was also recently selected as a special merit Rolls Royce Science prize winner in recognition of the quality of ideas and action plans to develop partnerships through science.
