Stephen Kirchner, aged 18, an American student from ACS Cobham, has been chosen to take part in the Olympic Torch Relay when it travels through Surrey later this month.

Stephen was nominated to take part in the relay by his PE teacher, in recognition of his personal experiences with cancer. He is looking forward to taking part in the relay:

‘I missed a year of school 3 years ago while being treated for leukaemia, and my mother is currently being treated for breast cancer. I feel it is a great honour to carry the torch and I do so to honour my mother and on behalf of the ACS International School community which has been so supportive of me and my family. I will carry the torch to raise awareness of cancer and to show that there is hope for those many people who are struggling with this disease.'

Steven's selection as a torch carrier follows his organisation of a recent ‘Rock your Shades’ event for the Teenage Cancer Trust, where staff and students wore sunglasses to raise funds.
