Pupils at Bruton School for Girls were visited by an aspiring astronaut and flight lieutenant for their annual Science Week lecture.

Kerry Bennett spoke about her geophysics degree and her experiences on the BBC television series, ‘Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?’, where she underwent both physical and psychological tests and progressed to the final three.

She inspired the audience with her journey to becoming an RAF pilot, with one of her many highlights flying James Bond actor Daniel Craig into Camp Bastion, Afghanistan. Kerry highlighted the need for students to work hard towards their ambitions and to take risks when required.

Georgie, an upper sixth student, said: “Kerry made it clear that if you don’t reach your goal you mustn’t give up. Take a different approach and you will get there… eventually!”.

Nicky Botterill, headmistress at Bruton School for Girls, added: “The all-girls nature of our classes means our pupils aren’t intimidated by being the minority in a physics lesson.  Girls are at the heart of every subject and our girl-centred approach allows her to pursue her passions and achieve her dreams.”
