Dr Craig Brown, who was educated at the Derbyshire school in the 1980s, visited the current senior science pupils to talk about his career, the opportunities available now and in the future of science and how to make the most of them.

Dr Brown is an instrument scientist for the Disk Chopper Spectrometer at the NIST Centre for Neutron Research (NCNR) in Maryland, where he researches science underlying future energy technologies.

Laurence McKell, headmaster at Mount St Mary’s, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Craig Brown to the Mount. His success in the field of science is a great inspiration for our science pupils who were able to gain some useful insights for their future careers.

“With our learning and developing programme, we aim to help each student develop their talents both in and outside the classroom and to support them in what ever path they chose to pursue after being at the Mount.”

Earlier this year, Dr Brown won the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) which was bestowed on him by President Barack Obama for his outstanding contribution to the American world of science.

Dr Brown excelled in sciences during his time at Mount St Mary’s and went on to read Natural Science at the University of Cambridge.

Mount St Mary's College is an 11- 18, co-educational, boarding and day school, which is proudly non-selective and sees many of its students go on to top universities.
