At a time, when A-levels have gone through significant reform and there is national uncertainty over the more rigorous linear examinations, results at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook are the best on record.

This year saw the largest ever Year 13 cohort gain an 88% A* to C pass rate. Twenty-six pupils, achieved the equivalent of three A grades and one third of A Level papers were awarded an A* or A.

The percentage of A*to B grades increased by an impressive 8% compared to last year (13% vs 2016) as the school continues to stretch the most able and challenge pupils of all abilities to achieve their personal best.

With 30 A level and BTEC subjects on offer supplemented by enrichment courses and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), the Royal Hospital School demonstrates that breadth of choice combined with academic rigor is the formula for success.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport saw 100% of pupils gaining a Distinction*, Distinction or Merit (the equivalent of A*to C grades) in its first year and the School further cements its commitment to BTEC options with the Level 3 Diploma in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (two A level equivalent) in September 2018.

Early indications suggest that this year the vast majority pupils will have gained their first place choice of university including three to Cambridge, one to Oxford and others to top UK universities including Durham, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Bristol, Exeter, Warwick, Leeds and Manchester.

Simon Lockyer, Headmaster: “I am delighted for both the pupils and teachers with the performance this year. This strong improvement in proportion of A* to B grades and the fact that a third of entries were awarded A*/A in the context of a larger than ever cohort, demonstrates the Royal Hospital School’s commitment to stretch and challenge for pupils of all abilities. These impressive young people continue to make outstanding contributions to school life through leadership roles, sport, music, service and participating in the many co-curricular activities on offer alongside securing excellent results. I am incredibly proud of what they have achieved and the outstanding commitment of the staff who have taught and supported them.”
