In December the academic scholars went to visit the university town of Oxford. As we walked through its Bethany School Scholars visit oxfordcobbled streets, Mr Kilbride pointed out places of interest until we reached our first stop; the Ashmolean museum.

Here we saw the Alfred Stone, which marks the beginning of a shared form of written English, among many other displays including artefacts from Japan, Rome and an astounding section of a decorated ancient Egyptian tomb.

On our way to the Covered Market, we walked around the grounds of Trinity College. Then we had a more detailed look at Magdalen College, including where C.S Lewis had his rooms.

A highlight of this visit was seeing the large chapel with a copy of Da Vinci’s Last Supper on the wall, and then the cloisters where parts of the Harry Potter movies were filmed.

We enjoyed our students’ lunch in the college bar. The final stop was the Pitt Rivers museum; a collection of the many archaeological and anthropological artefacts belonging to Oxford University.

Some of the more obscure and peculiar items that we saw were the skulls of executed prisoners and shrunken heads from the Upper Amazon!

The day was a very enjoyable one and I’m sure everybody learnt something and came away with a better sense of context when they next hear about Oxford University.
