On Tuesday 11th December, six former students of Bethany School received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award at St James’ Palace in the prestigious Queen Anne’s room.

Oliver Cooter, Michael Blacker, Richard Allen, James Byrt, George Raw and Richard Mills attended the ceremony each accompanied by a guest. His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex was the guest of honour.

He was presented to each group and spoke with various members. In addition, a warm welcome was given to Mr Tom Aggar, Paralympic athlete, who won a Gold medal at the Beijing Olympics for arms-only sculling.

Tom presented the Gold Award certificates to each of the young people. Special guests at the ceremony included Mr and Mrs Johnson, formerly of Bethany School, who were invited to attend the ceremony in recognition of their many years leading and co-ordinating the DofE at Bethany School.

Mrs Thorpe, who is currently involved in running the DofE at Bethany, was also present, having volunteered to act as Marshal for the day. Well done to all involved this is a great achievement.
