TEAM SHORTLISTED FOR AVIVA AND DAILY TELEGRAPH SCHOOL SPORT MATTERS AWARD 2012

BIshops Stortford Rugby teamBishop’s Stortford College Junior School is celebrating after receiving an invitation to attend the 2012 Aviva and Daily Telegraph School Sport Matters Awards Ceremony at the highly prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Wednesday 14th November.

The school’s 1st XV rugby squad have been shortlisted for the School Team of the Year category, based on their outstanding performance during the 2011/12 season. From September 2011 to March 2012, the team played a total of 31 matches, fourteen 15-a-side and seventeen 7-a-side games. The only defeat in the first part of the season came on the Irish tour against Presentation Brothers College, alma mater of the celebrated Ireland half-back pairing of Ronan O’Gara and Peter Stringer while there was also just one loss in sevens season in the quarter finals at the Berkhamsted Tournament.

The climax of the season was the winning of the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School Sevens where the second try of that final was the two hundredth in all games.

Blessed with extraordinary pace the team played a most expansive game with excellent handling and support play and throughout the season regular touchline comments were made about the team’s skill level and their ability to score tries from anywhere on the field.

Strong rugby schools such as Bedford and Stamford suffered at the hands of this exceptional side and it was with great pride that by the end of the season, the two top try scorers, fullback Milo Linney and number eight Will Civil had been selected to join the Saracens Academy.

The award ceremony will consist of a lunch, followed by the presentation of awards given by a range of prestigious sports personalities, including Jess Ennis, Richard Whitehead and Zoe Smith. There will be the opportunity to go on a tour around Lord’s Cricket Ground as well.

John Greathead, Head of Junior School commented, ‘We are all extremely proud of the fantastic achievements of our 1st XV last season. Their success at Rosslyn Park is the highlight of a year in which the boys also won the IAPS National Hockey Champions and six of them won National Athletics titles. We are also very proud of the excellent coaching pupils here receive from dedicated and talented staff which is a key part of the boys’ success. It has been a wonderful summer of sport for GB and for Bishop’s Stortford College Junior School.’
