Jonathan Minihane

Seventeen year old Jonathan Minihane from Bishop’s Stortford College has been awarded a highly sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship that identifies him as one of the country’s future leaders in engineering and technical design.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship encourages and celebrates the future of engineering and technical design with funding from charitable donors, respect from leading universities and companies and support from top engineering employers and organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Microsoft Research and The Royal Air Force. This renowned Scholarship provides pupils with a financial award to support their A level studies and a range of activities to enhance their understanding and experience of engineering.

Jonathan had to successfully complete a rigorous selection process consisting of a detailed application form, a two-hour aptitude exam and an interview hosted at a top engineering university. The aptitude exam tested his flair and originality in solving engineering design problems and the in-depth interview asked about his career aspirations and required a discussion of an engineering project he had conducted. The selection process also involved an assessed team exercise to solve a hands-on engineering problem.

Overall there were 1380 applications this year with 380 scholarships awarded from 653 pupils who reached the final interview stage; Jonathan’s Scholarship is a tremendous achievement. As an Arkwright Scholar he will have access to mentoring through Arkwright partnership organisations, industry-based enrichment opportunities and the opportunity to gain the exclusive Arkwright Undergraduate Scholarship worth up to £12,000 for a degree in engineering or technical design.

Jonathan says ‘this scholarship has given me a great opportunity to further my knowledge into this industry. Hopefully, with such opportunities as the Arkwright mentoring scheme, I will have a head start in an engineering career and I look forward to making the most of all the opportunities I have been provided.’

The Scholarship was formally presented at a prestigious ceremony supported by The Institution of Engineering and Technology in London. The College congratulates Jonathan on his achievement.
