Bishop’s Stortford College has become the first school in the town to be affiliated with The Royal British Legion (TRBL).
For the past two years, a small group of pupils from the school have attended the town’s Remembrance Service to pay their respects and lay wreaths at the Bishop’s Stortford War Memorial. In support of this, The Royal British Legion has reached out to the college with the aim of creating a mutually beneficial partnership.
It now holds certified Youth Group Affiliation, which will allow them to work with TRBL on fundraising projects such as the Poppy Appeal, attend Remembrance services and parades and become Branch Standard Bearers, as well as to promote mutual community support. Pupils will gain a greater understanding of the work of the Legion and their support of the Armed Forces and the Legion will provide speakers to visit the college and inform pupils about the organisation, the military and offer favourable opportunities relating to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
Last year, 150 pupils undertook awards at either Bronze, Silver or Gold level and achieved a pass rate of 88%. Fundraising is an ever-growing popular activity within the programme and the opportunities offered by The Royal British Legion will be invaluable to the pupils.
The College looks forward to cultivating this encouraging partnership with The Royal British Legion and its Bishop’s Stortford members.
