Saint Felix School Sixth Formers enjoyed a coup this week as they benefitted from the first of a series of talks about financial literacy given by bestselling author, Linda Davies, which coincides with the publication of her latest title: 10 Things Everyone Needs to Know about Money – Atebol, 2021.

Is it best to buy gold? Is it always a bad thing to put cash under a mattress? What on earth is Bitcoin anyway? These were just a few of the questions posed in the light touch talk by Davies to Sixth Formers at Saint Felix this week, as part of its super curricular Futures Programme.

Issues such as gender bias, societal taboos and “cappuccino economics” were discussed as well as the insidious ways in which gambling can encroach on the lives of young people as part of innocent seeming leisure pursuits and 24-hour internet access via mobile technology. The uncomfortable truth is that 55K of 12-18 year olds are problem gamblers

Davies aims to educate and inform young people as they approach their professional lives. Attendees were encouraged to consider their future selves (youth is on their side!) and take a long-term view to saving and investment.

Former investment banker Davies’ approach is to demystify jargon and “unnecessary complexity” and examine beliefs which are often formed at a very young age.

Saint Felix Sixth Formers were given some interesting “homework”: to invest an imaginary sum of one thousand pounds and research the variety of platforms on offer – whether that be downloading a trading app or taking an interest in the financial section of the weekend papers.

Davies has long standing connections with Saint Felix school, as a parent of two children who attended as pupils and as a neighbour with a property adjacent the school site.

Senior Year 11 pupils will have the chance to attend the talks after the Easter break.

“Financial literacy is an essential part of becoming young adults and it is important to demystify it as much as possible. Linda can give exciting and informative lessons in a language that they all understand.” Said Joahnna Harlock, Head of Sixth Form, Saint Felix School
