Bournemouth Collegiate School pupils enjoyed a day of racing at Goodwood Race Track in Sussex as part of the Bournemouth CollegiateGreenpower Racing initiative.

They had spent the last few months building a green power kit car as part of their Design and Technology Club.

Ten Club members had toiled over the construction, design and race strategy and were eager to put their new car to the test at the elite racing track.

The pupils enjoyed an amazing day, along with their teachers, racing against many schools from across the whole of the Southern region.

Each pupil had the opportunity to race the car and push to its limits in a four hour total endurance race.

Mrs Powell, Design and Technology teacher, said, “I’m really thrilled for our team.

We managed to complete the race on our first attempt, with no breakdowns at all. This is a huge achievement for any school. We finished 34th out of over 50 competitors but even though we may not have been the fastest car we were definitely one of the most reliable – an achievement to be proud of!”

Year 10 Pupil, Beth D’Agostino comleted the fastest lap for the team and said, “It was really exciting and very satisfying to know that our hard work had paid off and that the car was such a success on the day.

It exceeded all our expectations and made us realise how far we’ve come from just having an initial shell to ending up with a car fit for racing and representing our school at Goodwood. The team is looking forward to developing the car further next year.”
