Following an onsite audit last week Culford is now offering Forest School sessions as part of its dynamic approach to education.

The endorsement will enable Culford staff who have been trained in the forest school initiative to provide a comprehensive programme of hands-on learning experiences in the grounds of Culford School.

The forest school initiative originates from the Scandinavian Early Years education system, which is renowned to be one of the best in the world.

The initiative allows children the time and space to explore and develop their curiosity through hands-on practical experiences. Children learn new skills while building independence and self-esteem.

Forest school leader and Culford Pre-Prep teacher, Kirsty Trow, has already identified many benefits of the programme: “The forest school ethos encourages each child’s natural curiosity in an outdoor environment. Children are taught how to manage risk which in turn, builds their confidence.

The initiative has far-reaching benefits in all areas of the curriculum and beyond, including health and fitness, social development and communication skills.”

Culford’s staff worked with local environmental and educational charity, The Green Light Trust, in order to train for the accreditation.

The highly regarded Lawshall-based charity is recognised by the National Open College Network to deliver a suite of Forest School qualifications, and they are delighted to be supporting Culford School in establishing this valuable provision as part of each child’s holistic educational experience.

Head of Culford Pre-Prep, Sarah Preston, is excited by the opportunities this development will offer pupils: “The forest school method give pupils of all ages and learning styles the chance to acquire invaluable skills. The programme is engaging, active and fun, and we’re already thrilled with the results of the sessions we have held so far.”
