Record results at A-level as 100 Sixth Formers get at least three A grades. Brighton College

Earlier this year, The Sunday Times awarded Brighton College the title of England's School of the Year after the college became the first independent school ever to improve its results every single year for five years.

We are absolutely delighted that this year's leavers have done it again!

Incredibly, 100 boys and girls gained AAA or better in their A-levels and 96.6% of grades were at A*, A or B – the grades demanded by top universities.

At the top end, 20 pupils gained at least three grades at A* – a phenomenal achievement.

There are many others too celebrating their own personal triumphs and we are all as delighted by those getting B grades in subjects they found really difficult as by those securing 5 A*s.

The Head Master, Richard Cairns expressed his delight: "This really has been a very special year group.

They have given so much of themselves to entertain us on the stage, in the concert hall, on the sports field and around the college. That they have found time to do some work on the way and achieve such stellar results is an obvious bonus. I am frankly in awe of them."

Record GCSE results with over 90% of grades at A* or A

Not to be outdone by the record-breaking Upper Sixth, our GCSE candidates have also enjoyed a record set of results. More than 90% of grades were at A* or A (those grades demanded by leading universities) and, astonishingly, the most common grade of all was an A*.

It was great to see Emma Harris celebrating 11 A* grades on her 16th birthday today, Sam and Annie de Belder sharing 20 A* grades and every English boy or girl sitting Mandarin Chinese getting an A*. There were, of course, many other personal highlights and a lot of very happy and relieved faces.

For those who enjoy their statistics, the historical pattern over six years has been as follows for A*/A:

2007 64% 2008 70% 2009 76% 2010 83% 2011 90% 2012 90% (with record % of A*s)

In total, there were 852 A* grades, 618 A grades, 138 B grades and 21 C grades.

Once again, these are comfortably the best results in Sussex and place Brighton among the top 5 co-educational schools in England for 5 years in succession.
