Fifteen pupils took part in heated political debates at Birmingham Council House. Working in two committees – Civil Liberties and Legal Affairs – they found themselves in direct opposition over important issues and contributing brilliantly to debates on topics including the future of green industry, investment in culture and funding scientific research.

The Civil Liberties Committee came top in their debate – they now go through to the National Finals of the European Youth Parliament at Durham University in July; team members are Dominic Calvert, Hamish Docherty, Adam Robertson, Polly Fletcher, Lizzie Leather, Harry Heath, Jonathan Turner and Lewis Martins. The Legal Affairs team of David Nowrin, Will Sarjant, Chris Dodd, Damon Poole, Maxime Cox and Sarah Westlake were runners up in their debate.
