Bromsgrove Preparatory School’s Hockey 1st VII team have won the National IAPS Hockey 2011 Bromsgrove School national hockey championsChampionship at Millfield School.
It is the third time in twelve years that the Bromsgrove team have won the title, with the two other occasions in 2004 and 2005. Only the host team, Millfield, have won the Championship more times, making Bromsgrove the second best school in the competition’s history. The boys involved are part of one of the strongest sporting year groups in the School’s history, as proved by an unstoppable streak in the 1st XV’s Rugby season and the ongoing Rugby Sevens season.
At the tournament at Millfield on Tuesday, the Hockey 1st VII team faced the best schools from all over the country. A challenging group stage, in which some of the top schools were knocked out, led to the quarter-final against All Hallows. A tense match with a close score, but Bromsgrove triumphed to go on to face Gresham’s in the semi-final. This was another tight match but again Bromsgrove won through.
In the final against Culford, who had proved themselves strong opponents in the group stages, the team faced a disastrous start with the opposition pulling ahead and Tom Ford injured with a stick in the mouth, breaking two teeth. Despite this, the team proved their fighting spirit, coming back to equalise and go ahead in the second half. A final score of 2-1 sealed the win and the Championship.
Coach Chris Harris says, “It was a magnificent team effort and every member of the squad contributed through the day. James Taylor deserves special mention for the superb performances that he put in and the way that he led the team all day. Every member of the squad can feel very proud of their efforts and it was a very happy crew of boys and staff in the coach on the way back”.
