Twelve pupils from Bromsgrove School enjoyed an afternoon of conservation activities in glorious sunshine at the Rydal PenrhosLickey End nature reserve last Tuesday.

The site, which the School has been working on for over four years, is now home to an established community of water voles – a species which is classed as an indicator of a healthy environment.

The group enhanced the streams by planting a wide variety of plants that the water voles eat, including Marsh Marigold, Flag Iris and rushes to help sustain the voles throughout the year.

Pupils also planted over thirty native trees in the adjacent woodland.

Geography teacher Mrs Holden, who runs the Eco Action scheme, said: “The backwater channels are now established and are bursting with vegetation that has been planted by Bromsgrove pupils over the years.

The park was granted a green flag last year in recognition of the biodiversity that it supports. This is due in a large part to the work of Bromsgrove School pupils.”
